A leading Iran war expert has declared that U.S. military actions have backfired, strengthening Iran’s strategic position and leaving the United States at a dangerous crossroads with limited options. Professor Robert Pape of the University of Chicago made the assessment during an interview on "The Diary Of A CEO" with host Stephen Bartlett.
Pape stated that despite years of U.S. bombing campaigns, Iran has emerged more powerful, not weaker. “Iran has figured out that we can't beat them,” he said. “We're not weakening Iran. We have strengthened Iran and we can't stop their drone attacks.” He emphasized Iran's advantage in the Strait of Hormuz, noting, “We can't stop their drone attacks against the ships in the Strait of Hormuz. They know it. They can use that to their advantage.”
According to Pape, U.S. air power is incapable of destroying Iran’s most valuable assets. He explained that while bombers can destroy nuclear facilities, they cannot eliminate Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium. “Our bombers would always be able to destroy the target, the industrial facility that was enriching the uranium. The problem always was, no matter which year we did this, you wouldn't be able to destroy the enriched material, the actual gold,” he noted.
Pape also highlighted Iran’s strategic adaptation, including the possibility of anticipating bombings and dispersing assets in advance. “They might even anticipate the bombs coming because they might get some indications, we're building up and then disperse in advance,” he said.
The expert described decision-making in the White House as “far more chaotic than is happening in the government of Iran,” calling it evidence that U.S. power is diminishing. He also declared that “NATO is for all practical purposes dead.”
Pape warned that the U.S. now faces a stark choice: launch a prolonged and costly ground invasion of Iran or accept Iran as an emerging world power. He raised the alarm about potential cooperation between Iran, Russia, and China, which could collectively control 30% of the global oil supply.
Pape also characterized President Trump’s threat to “end a civilization” as a declared statement of genocidal intent, unprecedented for a U.S. president.
He cautioned that a ground invasion would likely lead to prolonged conflict with significant U.S. casualties, noting that “the political reactions by the population often are overwhelming the tactical military effects.”
Concluding with a grave warning, Pape stated, “We are at a fork in the road. There is a stage four.”
