Geophysicist Stefan Burns said multiple cosmic and planetary alignments have created a critical time period with dramatically elevated risk for major seismic or solar events.

Burns pointed to a highly anomalous spike in global seismic activity, with 15 magnitude 5.0-5.9 earthquakes occurring in the past 24 hours. He argued this far exceeds the standard rate of four to five such quakes per day and could be a precursor to a much larger event.

"We are right now in the critical time period that we've been looking at," Burns said during his analysis.

Comet C/2025 R3 PANSTARRS is currently the brightest comet of 2026 and will reach its perihelion, or closest approach to the sun, on April 19, 2026. A perfect alignment between the sun, the comet, and Earth is set to occur on April 25-26. "It will have a perfect sun comet Earth alignment 25th 26th," Burns said.

There is currently a notable planetary alignment involving Earth, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, and Neptune all sharing roughly the same tilt angle. Burns claimed this configuration contributes to the heightened environmental instability by creating unusual gravitational and electromagnetic forces on Earth's systems.

A giant coronal hole on the sun is currently emitting a high-speed stream of solar wind, and Burns said Earth is now magnetically connected to this feature. "We are now magnetically connected to the sun directly," he said.

Two significant solar storms were launched toward Mars in the past week, with one impacting the planet yesterday and a second expected to impact tomorrow. These storms represent heightened solar activity that could affect Earth's space weather environment.

A G2 geomagnetic storm recently occurred on Earth, driven by solar wind that reached velocities of 550 kilometers per second. This moderate geomagnetic storm indicates the sun's increased activity levels and potential for more significant events.

Burns said the Kermadec Trench north of New Zealand is the most likely location for a potential large earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater due to recent seismic activity in that region. The area has shown increased movement that could signal a major tectonic release.

A large plasma filament launched from the sun today and may give Earth a glancing impact in the coming days. This solar material could create additional geomagnetic disturbances as it passes near our planet.

A Venus-Moon conjunction will be visible tonight after sunset, featuring a 4% crescent moon near Venus and the Pleiades star cluster. This celestial event occurs amid the other significant planetary alignments currently affecting Earth.

Burns said the convergence of these factors creates unprecedented conditions for potential major events. "The chance of something is much, much, much higher," he said.
