Dr. Eric Berg identified vitamin D, magnesium, potassium, omega-3, and trace minerals as the only five supplements most people actually need, citing widespread deficiencies and ineffective multivitamin products.
Berg argued that vitamin D3 with K2 serves as a foundational supplement because modern lifestyles limit sun exposure and food sources are insufficient. "It's impossible to get your vitamin D from food," Berg said. He contended that vitamin D functions as one of the most potent anti-inflammatory compounds in the body.
Magnesium represents another critical nutrient essential for vitamin D function, energy production, and muscle regulation, Berg said. "If vitamin D is the most important vitamin, magnesium is the most important mineral," he claimed. Berg said that magnesium glycinate offers 80% absorption compared to just 3-4% for magnesium oxide formulations.
Berg claimed that potassium deficiency affects most people, with individuals typically consuming less than half the recommended daily amount. "Potassium is the one that most people are deficient in," Berg said. This deficiency impacts blood sugar regulation, blood pressure control, and energy levels, he argued.
Berg claimed omega-3 supplementation is necessary to counterbalance pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids from modern diets. Most people have a 10:1 or 20:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 instead of the ideal 1:1 ratio, he said.
Berg contended that modern farming practices have created widespread trace mineral deficiencies by only replenishing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in soil while neglecting other essential minerals. This depletion means even healthy diets may lack crucial trace elements.
According to Berg, generic multivitamins contain synthetic ingredients and fillers while providing minimal nutritional benefit. Most one-a-day vitamins are owned by pharmaceutical or chemical companies, he said.
The health expert recommended obtaining these five specific nutrients through targeted supplementation rather than multivitamins to address the most common nutritional deficiencies affecting modern populations.
